EVERYDAY TIPS
“Our fragile planet is hanging by a thread. We are still knocking on the door of climate catastrophe. It is time to go into emergency mode — or our chance of reaching net-zero will itself be zero.”
- UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres
Fly less
Air travel is 50 times worse than driving in terms of how much carbon it produces. One transatlantic flight could add as much to your carbon footprint as a year’s worth of driving. Minimise your flights by going on road trips instead, or simply using technology like facetime to connect.
Recycle
Recycling products gives them a second life and spares the emissions and detrimental effects of producing new ones. Recycling means there’s no need to mine new raw materials. Live by these three rules wherever possible: REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
No plastics
Plastics are slow to degrade - taking millions of years to decompose. They infiltrate land and water ecosystems, killing biodiversity. You can reduce your plastic usage with paper, metal or glass straws, and by using reusable bags when shopping. Be on the lookout for that pesky plastic!
Short showers
Taking shorter showers means conserving water, and reducing energy usage. You might not think about it when you’re showering, but irrigation and heating water takes up lots of energy. Taking shorter showers of around 5 minutes rather than 10 helps the environment.
Public transport
Emissions from motor vehicles not only contribute to global warming, but also pollute cities and towns, threatening people’s health, especially children and the elderly. Pollution can also lead to heart disease. Taking public transport, walking or biking or driving electric vehicles decreases your emissions massively.
